A Few Things You Might Not Know About Hiring A Drunk Driving Attorney

You might know that it's a good idea to hire a drunk driving attorney after being arrested for a DWI. There are certain things that you might not really know about hiring one of these attorneys, however. These are a few things that you might not know but that you will probably want to know if you are currently facing DWI charges and if you are hoping to hire an attorney.

You Can Hire an Attorney While You're Still in Jail

You might assume that you have to wait until you get out of jail to hire a DWI attorney. However, this often is not the case at all. While you're in jail, you may be given the chance to call an attorney. Alternatively, one of your family members or friends can hire an attorney for you.

This can be useful in some situations. For example, if you have a high bail amount while in jail for a DWI — which might be the case if you have a bad criminal record or if there are a lot of aggravating factors in your DWI case — you might need to hire an attorney while you're still in jail. Then, the attorney might be able to ask for a bail reduction to help you get out of jail more easily and affordably.

Of course, you don't have to hire a DWI attorney while you're in jail. If you have already posted bail after being arrested for a DWI, you still have the chance to hire an attorney to help with your case. You will probably want to do so as soon as you can.

Your Attorney Will Probably Represent You on Related Charges

When you were arrested for drunk driving, there is a chance that you were arrested for other things, too. You might have been arrested for possession of an open beverage of alcohol in your car, or you might have had drugs in your possession. You might have been cited for a driving violation, or you might have had a suspended license at the time that you were pulled over. Depending on the charges, there is a good chance that your DWI attorney will be able to help with these matters, too.

You'll Probably Still Be Required to Go to Court

If you have hired an attorney in the past for driving violations, then you might not have even had to go to court; instead, your attorney might have handled everything for you. Although this might be an option for more minor charges, such as speeding tickets, it usually isn't the case for more serious matters, such as DWI offenses. Therefore, you will probably be required to go to court. Luckily, however, if you hire an attorney, you will not have to go to court on your own.
